Day 25: Final Day at the Project

This morning the group woke up at 6:30 and were slightly saddened at the thought that this was the last day of their last phase on expedition. But the breakfast was very enjoyable, the group had toasted bread with eggs and beans. At 8 O’clock most of the group left for the project but Pippa, Liv, Ellie and Shona went to visit the children at the Special Education Unit (after Grace and Imy had come back raving about it the day before). The group put together all the gifts they had brought with them and we donated them to the class; they were extremely grateful. We spent the first part of the morning playing with the colouring in and activity books, which were a huge hit.

When it came to break we went outside to play with the frisbee and tennis ball game, which we had also donated, and the other children from the school started to gather around as they wanted to join in. Unfortunately, they were being slightly aggressive to the disabled children. We were told by their teacher that this isn’t uncommon as at the school the children in the Special Education Unit aren’t treated nicely at all, so when it became too loud we took the children back inside and Pippa had to guard the door to stop the other children from coming in and taking their new gifts. The 4 of us had to leave at 11 but were very glad to have met the wonderful children and the teacher was so grateful for all that our team had done. On the way back we picked up more food to use in the couscous for lunch and cottage pie for dinner as well as some snacks to give to the team who had been working hard on the project all morning. The building project in the morning hadn’t gone as well as we had hoped, as the walls kept falling down!

At 2 o’clock, all of the team went back to the house for the last time with the hope to finish as much as possible. It was only the one interior wall left, but this was a long proses as the mud was still not staying well at all and the team had to keep rebuilding parts. As it was the last day we also had fun messing around and throwing it at each other. Sadly 4 o’clock came around and we had to finish where we were with only a small gap left at the top to fill in. To see how much progress the team had made on the house was very satisfying and were pleased with how it turned out. We got back to the campsite, showered and had one of our last team meetings in which the leaders told us that they would cook the cottage pie whilst we sorted our group kit, the left over food, and scrub the trangias until they were spotless. At this point Jake had gone to sleep as he wasn’t feeling well. Once everything had been cleaned, the leaders dished up and the group enjoyed their penultimate dinner of the trip around the fire before sorting out our bags for our early morning leave for Livingstone.
